Having codes ATH and LGAV according to IATA and ICAO, the Athens International Airport started operations in 2001. Serving Athens and Attica, the airport is owned by the Greek government and run by Athens International Airport S.A. The airport replaced the older Hellenikon International Airport.
The OASA Greek buses serve this airport from different parts of the city. Alternatively, you can get to the airport by taking the Attica highway and then the Athens Metro. The two terminals, the main and the satellite together serve some 16 million tourists, every year. Serving as the base for Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines, the airport also sees Air Malta, British Airways, Emirates, KLM, and Lufthansa among others.
This airport serves Asian destinations such as Bangkok, Singapore, Beijing and also is the principal gateway for European travelers to reach the Middle East. European Aviation Safety Agency and Federal Aviation Administration have approved of this airport and this is now ready for the A380.
