Palese Macchie Airport or the Bari International Airport is located about 8 km from the city centre. Originally a military airport it was opened to the civilian aircrafts in 1960s. 1981 saw the construction of the passengers’ terminal and the football World Cup in 2000 mandated additional renovation. Another terminal was opened to the public in 2005. There are plans to extend the terminals.
2007 saw about 2 million passengers, up by 20% over the previous year. The IATA and ICAO codes are BRI and LIBD; this airport is managed by Aeroporti di Puglia. If you’re in the Northern part of the city, you can go down Bari Nord Toll Station, A14 Highway, and Bari Ring road along Foggia to the airport. SP 271 Parkway from the Toll Station of Bari Sud, should be taken if you’re in the Southern side. From Foggia take SS.16 Interstate to the airport. Some of the airlines served are British Airways, SkyEurope, Air Italy, and Eurofly.
