Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK/ ZBAA) is Beijing’s main airport. Its IATA code reflects the former name, which was Peking. The new code BJS is also used. Located 20km from the northeast of the center of Beijing city, the airport is used by Air China as its main hub. China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines have also chosen this airport as their hub.
Having handled more than 53 million passengers in 2007, the Beijing Capital International Airport ranked ninth in the world. It has two terminals and with the opening of the third one early in 2008, passenger traffic figures are expected to reach to 82 million. The three terminals are connected by shuttles.
A new airport and a fourth runway is being planned to be constructed in 2010, which will be big enough to handle around 100 million passengers. The Airport Expressway constructed in the early 90’s connects the airport to the city center. Three other expressways from three different directions will link to the airport in 2008. A metered taxi ride would take you roughly 50 minutes to an hour to reach Beijing.
