The IATA and ICAO codes for Bergen Airport, Flesland are BGO and ENBR. Owned by Avinor, the airport is about 19km from the city centre, on its southern side. The airport was opened in 1955 and has served both civil and military purposes. It was initially funded by NATO. There is 1 terminal and getting to the airport isn't too much of a hassle; drive down R580 and then head east towards the city centre. This drive takes about 30 minutes and the road is well signposted. There are airport buses as well.
The airport served about 4 million passengers and saw some 95,000 flights in 2007. Some of the major airlines include Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, and Norwegian Air Shuttle; there are charter flights too from this airport. About 35 destinations are served in all. There are plans afoot to extend the international terminal. The Bergen Light Rail could in due course run up to the airport.
