Situated in the Wahner Heide nature reserve, the Bonn international airport is about 15 km, southeast of central Cologne. In 2007 there were about 10.5 million passengers and 150,000 aircraft movements in this 24 hour airport. It started off as a military training area and it saw civilian aircrafts only in 1951. Two more runways and a terminal was constructed in 1950s and 1960s. A second terminal and a long-distance railway station were additional steps taken to ease the passengers’ movements.
Operated by Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH, this airport is CGN and EDDK in the IATA and ICAO. Serving as the hub for low-cost airlines such as EasyJet, Wizz Air, and Germanwings, this airport also sees Iran Air, Turkish Airlines, KLM, and Sky Airlines.
Since this airport was designed to be a drive-in and the spur from Autobahn A59 motorway runs up to the terminal, getting to the Cologne-Bonn airport isn’t too much of an issue.
