The Brussels international airport is located in Zaventem and is 12 km northeast of Brussels. Operated by The Brussels Airport Company, the airport is a hub for European Air Transport, Jet Airways, Singapore Airlines, and a private company Abelag Aviation. The IATA and ICAO codes are BRU and EBBR. This airport dates back to the 1940s though it was opened in 1958. A new cargo terminal was built in 1976 and in 2007 17.8 million passengers used this airport, an increase of 7% over the previous year. There was a major accident in 1961 that killed all 72 people onboard a Boeing 707.

In May 2008, a Boeing 747-200F overran the runway and was split in three. Four of the five people on the flight received minor injuries.
