Granada Airport is on the west of the city, some 16 km away. Initially it handled flights to Madrid and Barcelona; the international flights are mostly the low cost airlines. It started off as a military airport in 1922. Civilian flights began in the late 1920s. The modern airport was opened in 1972 and has one terminal. Due to the 1995 World Ski Championship, the airport was renovated and modernized. Having code GRX, the airport can be accessed by the A92 Seville motorway; the airport is 16 km near Santa Fe.
The buses are frequent and there are many from Madrid, Malaga, and other Spanish cities; it takes about 5 hours to get to Granada from Madrid by bus. Operated by AENA, the chief airlines are Monarch Airlines, Ryanair, Air Europa, Air Nostrum, Iberia, Spanair, and Vueling. This airport officially known as Federico Garcia Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport, served a million passengers and handled 21,800 flights in 2007.
