Hong Kong International Airport (IATA/ ICAO: HKG/ VHHH) is located 34km northwest of Hong Kong Island and is Hong Kong’s main airport. It began operations in 1998, prior to which the Kai Tak Airport was the main centre for international traffic.

The Hong Kong International Airport handled more than 47 million passengers in 2007, making it one of the busiest airports worldwide. With more than 3.5 million tonnes of cargo moved in 2007, it ranked second in the world as far as cargo movement is concerned.  It serves as an important transit hub for passengers and a trans-shipment point for air-cargo airlines.

In 1999, China Airlines Flight 642 caught fire as it was landing on the airport in rough weather, killing 3 people onboard the flight.
