Malta International Airport is the only airport in the island of Malta, and serves over three million people including locals and tourists. Located about 8 kilometers from Valletta, the capital of Malta, this airport is sometimes called Valletta Airport. It is also called Luqa airport by locals due to its proximity to the town of Luqa.
The airport is owned by a public limited company called Malta International Airport PLC, and its IATA and ICAO codes are MLA and LMML respectively. It is the base for Air Malta, the national airline of Malta which flies between Malta and about 36 destinations in Europe and North America.
The Malta International Airport experienced the worst ever hijacking on November 23, 1985, when EgyptAir Flight 648 was grounded on its way to Libya. Egyptian commandos stormed the plane in a bid to overpower the terrorists, but over 60 passengers, crewmembers and others were killed.
