Located 28km northeast from the centre of Munich, Germany, the Munich Airport is 448 meters above sea level. Its distance from the city centre is a slight drawback, but it is well connected to the center of Munich by road routes A99 and A92, and rail lines S1 and S8. You can travel from the rail station at the airport to the three train stations at the centre of the city within 45 minutes. This time will be reduced to 10 minutes with the introduction of the magnetic levitation train in 2009.
Having its IATA code as MUC and its ICAO as EDDM, the airport is officially known as Franz Josef Strauss Airport. Built on the Franzheim village in 1980, the airport became fully operational in 1992, and Terminal 2 was completed in 2003. The airport has two 4,000m parallel runways and the third one is in planning stage. It caters to about 33 million passengers, and is second to Frankfurt International Airport in passenger traffic. It was rated as the ‘Best Airport in Europe’ in 2007 by British-based research company Skytrax.
