The Riga airport is located 13km from the capital of Latvia, Riga. The IATA and the ICAO codes are RIX and EVRA and this airport was constructed in 1973. While there are plans to renovate the airport to handle 20 million passengers annually, in 2007 there were about 3 million travelers. The airport is the hub for airBaltic, Vip Avia, and LatCharter among others. Czech Airlines, Turkish Airlines, KLM, and Lufthansa are some of the 18 operating airlines. The airport serves 67 direct destinations.
Owned by Republic of Latvia, the airport is a joint-stock owned company. There are 3 terminals in all and there are expansion talks that include the building of a fourth terminal and runway reconstruction. To access the airport, you could drive down the highway P133 that connects the European route E22 with the airport. The bus service is excellent from the city centre and the resort city of Jurmala. The international buses from Estonia and Lithuania are another advantage.
