Located 8km northwest of Rotterdam city, the Rotterdam Airport (IATA: RTM, ICAO: EHRD) also lies 25km southeast of The Hague. It ranks third in Netherlands as far as passenger traffic is concerned.

Opened in 1956, the Rotterdam Airport celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. Although the airport initially did well, it faced a hurdle in 1970, when the Rotterdam Council decided to either close down or move the airport to another location in order to accommodate a housing estate. A lack of decision led to stagnation for the next 30 years, after which business began to bloom with the economic growth in the 90’s. Rotterdam airport regained its composure and was back in business in 2001, when the Rotterdam Council allowed it to operate for another 100 years.
 
Today, it handles annual passenger traffic of more than one million.  The airport is also used by many flying clubs and flying schools, and also by non-military and non-scheduled aircrafts.
