Located in Changi, the Singapore Changi Airport (SIN/ WSSS) lies about 17km northeast of the Singapore city centre. It is Singapore’s main airport and the main hub for the Southern Asian region. The operations are undertaken by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).
It is a base to many home airlines which include Singapore Airlines, SilkAir and Jetstar Asia Airways. Garuda Indonesia uses it as its main hub, and the Australian airline Qantas uses it as its secondary hub. Qantas uses the Singapore Changi Airport to stop over while on its characteristic Australia-Europe Kangaroo Route. Qantas also handles two million passengers every year, which makes it the busiest foreign airline operating in the airport.
The airport has 3 terminals and 3 ILS-equipped runways, and handles 36 million passengers annually. In 2007, it handled 1.89 million tons of cargo, making it the world’s busiest air- cargo carrier.
The MRT train station in Terminal 2 will take you to the city in just about 30 minutes. Taxies are available at the arrival halls of all three terminals. You will have to pay a slight surcharge in addition to the metered fare.
