Tenerife South Airport (IATA: TFS, ICAO: GCTS) and Tenerife North Airport (IATA: TFN, ICAO: GCXO) are the two airports located on the Spanish island of Tenerife, which is the largest of the Canary Islands. Tenerife South mostly handles International European flights and some domestic flights, whereas Tenerife North handles major flights to the mainland Spain. Both airports are owned and operated by Aena.
Tenerife South Airport is also called Reina Sofia Airport as it was inaugurated by Queen Sofia of Spain in 1978. It handles more than 8 million passengers annually. The airport lies 60km southwest of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of Tenerife. You can easily reach Tenerife South by TF1 motorway. You can travel all around the island using the public bus service TISTA.
Tenerife North Airport is situated just 11km from Santa Cruz. Formerly known as Los Rodeos Airport, this airport handles about 4 million passengers each year. The worst disaster in aviation history took place at this airport in 1977, when a KLM flight, which was taking-off, rammed into a taxiing Pan Am flight killing 583 people including passengers and crew.
