It began operations in 1930 and today serves about 4 million passengers annually. It therefore ranks third in passenger traffic in Greece. Some of the airlines operating at the airport are British Airways, Air One, Austrian Airlines, easyJet and TUIfly.
You can take the public bus no. 78 to reach the center of Thessaloniki in 20 minutes. A 24-hour taxi service is available at the terminal.
On July 4, 2000 Malev Flight 260, a charter flight from Budapest touched down at the airport without lowering the landing gear, but it managed to take flight and perform a go-around after skidding 400 meters on its belly, finally landing safely after lowering the landing gear.
