The Vienna International Airport is located 18km southeast of Vienna, the capital of Austria. It is also known as Schwechat Airport, as it is situated on Schwechat, a city on the outskirts of Vienna. The airport codes are VIE and LOWW for IATA AND ICAO respectively. It is the hub airport for Austrian Airlines and two other low-cost airlines, Sky Europe and Niki.
The airport has two terminals and two runways, and can handle big aircrafts such as the Airbus A340 and the Boeing 747. With 18.9 million passengers in 2007, the airport ranks first in Austria in terms of passenger traffic. It is also Austria’s largest airport.
Construction of a third terminal called Skylink is underway and will be completed in 2009. This terminal will enable the handling of more passengers and will accommodate the Airbus A380.
The airport has been in the news because of the 1964 and 1976 Austria Winter Olympics. On 27 December, 1985 three terrorists hurled hand-grenades at the Tel Aviv check-in queue, killing two and wounding 39 others. One terrorist was killed and the other two were captured by the Austrian police.
